About the Department of Home Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for the coordination and leadership of strategy and policy in relation to cyber and critical infrastructure resilience and security, immigration, border security and management, law enforcement and counter-terrorism, emergency management, citizenship, and the protection of Australia’s sovereignty and social cohesion.

The Home Affairs section in the Australian High Commission is responsible for supporting the delivery of Department of Home Affairs functions offshore through maintaining an immigration operations capability and engaging the Pakistan government on issues relating to border security, customs and immigration control and policy advice and cooperation on other Home Affairs functions.

About the position

Under general direction, the Visa Officer works to established policies and procedures to undertake visa application assessments, and complete appropriate verification activities to ensure the integrity of the migration program in a high-pressure environment.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform administrative tasks, including managing mailboxes, responding to public and other Australian

Government agency queries, maintain and update client records, ensure identity information is correct, and apply effective case management principles to daily work.

  • Communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders within the Department of Home Affairs to support a global visa processing model.
  • Undertake visa related casework (assess, investigate, decide) for temporary and/or permanent entry to Australia, applying the relevant legislation and policy to make lawful and fair decisions in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.
  • Apply and interpret relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to process visa applications, within service standards in a pressured environment, escalating sensitive and more complex cases to senior staff in accordance with office protocols.
  • Investigate the integrity of documents and other information in connection with visa applications and escalate any instances of possible fraud.
  • Prepare moderately complex written documentation for visa applicants, including the preparation of visa decision records and client correspondence.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Professional written and verbal language skills in English and Urdu.
  • Prior experience interpreting and applying legislation and policy to support business decisions.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Teams.
  • Experience in case management or managing complex stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships at a working level and mentor and guide junior visa officers.
  • Desirable an understanding of the Department of Home Affairs visa processing and integrity systems

4. Demonstrated experience performing complex case management work in a high-pressure environment.

5. Demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, Teams, to undertake analysis, draft documents, and manage workloads.

6. Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, honesty, accountability, and ethical behaviour, including the ability to identify personal conflicts of interest that arise while working in the position.
